Here's an excerpt from the program at the golf
tournament - perhaps to serve as a belated update!
Dear Family and Friends,

Thank you all very much for being with us again this year!  One would have
thought that last year’s outrageous rainstorm purchased for us several years’
worth of peace and relative predictability.  After over six years of generally
good health, well-being, and hospital-free living, a cellulitis infection and
subsequent hospitalization confounded Bunk this morning, on the eve of one
of his most favorite days, no less!  But it’s well worth noting that Bunk’s spirits
are high, and his attitude is well adjusted and positive. It’s just that he has
spoiled us all these years with his decent health and slow, methodical
improvements!  A few of these such improvements are worth mentioning. Bunk
recently began his third semester at the Academy of Art University in San
Francisco working toward his Master’s degree in Art Education.  He seems to
be pulling it off rather successfully, with grades hovering at A’s and B’s, all
while dealing with quadriplegia and paralysis- a fact he insisted on keeping
private from professors and administrators alike. He’ll have quite a bit of
explaining to do for his high school grades if he keeps this up. He began
tutoring on Thursdays, effectively dipping his toes back into the familiar realm
of his favored profession:  teaching!  It has been nice for him.  No update
would be complete without a few words on his physical therapy pursuits and
achievements. Bunk still visits Progressive Strength Recovery each Tuesday
and Thursday to work on regaining any movement or function that might be
remotely available to him.  He has succeeded beyond what I reported last
year, his baseline now consisting of self initiation in both movement and
rotation of his arms (generating from his shoulders, of course.)  The even
bigger news here is that he does this 40 minute workout, twice per week, all
while breathing on his own, completely off the ventilator.  He manages to
maintain his oxygen saturation at an adequate level all the while.  So why isn’t
he doing this all the time you might ask?  That is an excellent question, and
one I readily encourage you to ask him.  His visits to the goodwill gym still
keep him busy every Wednesday afternoon, and contribute steadfastly to his
pursuit of wellness and movement. Perhaps friends and family have noticed
when visiting that most afternoons after therapy are now spent online working
toward his degree.  That,  and painting, of course!   Both are wonderful in their
requisite discipline and ability to allow for planning into the future, which is a
beautiful gift indeed.

We wish to thank sincerely the chair, committee chairs and volunteers who
bring this day forth every year, and with it all the fruit that it bears.  Your love
and dedication will never be forgotten.

We’ll keep everyone informed of how Bunk is doing.  He and our family ask for
your prayers and that you enjoy your day just as you typically would here -
surrounded by lasting friendship and secure in the knowledge that your
support and love have made all the difference in
his life.

About Bunk Wurth
Alec (Bunk) Wurth
sustained a serious spinal
cord injury while playing
rugby on February 25th,
2006.  Since that day, Bunk
has been paralyzed from
the shoulders down and
only able to breathe with
the assistance of a
ventilator.
Family, friends and
especially Bunk are
confident that through his
hard work and
determination, faith,
prayers and excellent
medical care -  he will not
only manage, but thrive. He
is on that long journey to
recovery. We are most
grateful for your prayers and
encouragement.
